DONALD “DON” EDWARD BARRY
January 18, 1936 – March 30, 2025
We are absolutely heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandpa, and great grandpa. With his family by his side, he passed into the arms of his Lord on March 30, 2025.
Don was born on January 18, 1936, and was raised and educated in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his father Patrick in 1987, his mother Ethel in 1976, brother Bryan in 1973 and sister Marlene in 2012. He married his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life Midge Greenaway on June 7, 1958. They were married for 67 years they enjoyed 71 wonderful years together.
Words can never do justice to the legacy Don has left behind. He leaves to mourn his wife Midge, daughter Diana-Lynn Barry Petrash (Nelson), son Grant (Carol) Grandchildren Adam (Sarah) and Amber Bright (Trevor) and Trevor, Brittany (Joey) and Sean Barry. Great grandchildren Declan, Zeph and Sophea Petrash, Adrianna Cantlon, Phoenyx, and Archer Barry. Brother Patrick Barry, Sister-in-laws Pearl Greenaway and Joan Merrick, brother-in-law Bruce (Elizabeth) Greenaway, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Don lovingly devoted his life to his wife, family, God and his community. Don was employed as a Display Artist for The Bay for 45 and a half years retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Transcona Memorial United Church serving on several committees as well volunteering at the Transcona Food Bank for over 24 years. Don spent many years coaching soccer, hockey and football as well as volunteering at various community functions.
He was incredibly creative and talented and also an amazing carpenter as his home will testify. Don loved life and was always working and puttering in his garage and outside. Don loved fishing, baseball, gardening and skating. He was also an avid sports fan and always cheered for his Bombers and Jets.
Don loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always there for them whenever they needed him. Everyone will always remember how much he loved the holidays and the get-togethers with his family. He loved to decorate the house for all holidays including Canada Day. He enjoyed dressing up as a clown for every Halloween and giving out his balloons and candy to all the children. He especially looked forward to summers and swimming in their backyard pool with his family.
Don created so many beautiful memories and a life we can truly celebrate. The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Place for their compassion, care and support. As per his wishes there will not be a funeral and cremation has taken place. Donations may be made in Don’s memory to the Transcona Food Bank.
Don’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Don through his volunteer work at the Transcona Food Bank. When I first meet him, he reminded me of the character 'Oscar' on Corner Gas, you know the one, he always called everyone "Jackass'. However, Don's bubbling personality and easy smile were far from his dobbleganger from Corner Gas. Don was always pleasant and eager to help and listen. I will miss his impish smile, the sparkle in his eyes and his warm personality. I know he has them laughing upstairs .. for sure. See you on the other side Don. Love Cheryl
