Joan Buchko

JOAN LORRAINE BUCHKO
April 12, 1934 - April 1, 2025
In loving memory of Joan Buchko who peacefully passed away at the age of 90.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, James and Violet Arnold; grandson Baby Buchko; her husband Ed; and her siblings, Bill (Pauline), Gordon (Lorna), Doris (Phil), and Wally (Helen).
Remaining to cherish her memory are her children, Grant (Karen), Gayle (Keith), Glenn (Chris), and Garth (Lesley), along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Joan was born in Winnipeg. She attended Isaac Brock School K-8 and Daniel McIntyre School 9-12. Joan married Ed on July 10th, 1952. They were married for 62 years.
Joan loved her home and lifelong friendships on Landsdowne Avenue. It was here her children grew up in a family oriented, safe neighbourhood. Her home had an open-door policy. Music, pool, ping pong, food and laughter were a teenager’s haven.
Joan loved cooking, reading, music, dancing and travelling. Her many trips throughout the United States, cruising, and long stays in Florida were treasured.
Joan worked part-time for many years at Walsh/McKay. Here, Joan met her “Rumoli” friends. She cherished their friendship and enjoyed her last lunch with them in November.
Joan and Ed became members of the North Centennial Senior Centre. Once again, friendships were many along with lunches, trips, exercising, fundraising, and outings.
It was here Joan volunteered as a “Grandma” in a swim program for underprivileged children. Yearly events were held to provide the children with gifts and much needed smiles, encouragement and most of all some love from these wonderful seniors. Joan was recognized by the City of Winnipeg “for her many years of volunteer service at the North Centennial Senior Centre.”
Thank you to the supportive staff on the 4th floor at Poseidon Care Centre.
Cremation took place on April 3rd. The family will celebrate Joan’s life privately.
“Joan has gone to be with her beloved Ed. Ed has been patrolling the streets of heaven, keeping them safe while waiting for Joan’s arrival.”
Rest in Peace, Mom.
Joan’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Mrs. Buchko was one of the 'originals' on Landsdowne Ave. And she was a very special one of a kind lady. I remember decades ago here very warm and welcoming hospitality when playing pool and watching Chiller Thriller late night when I should have been home in bed. May she rest in peace.

She will always have a very special place in my heart. Joan was a very dear and special friend, a friendship which spanned some 55 years. I first met Joan when. I moved to Winnipeg and worked at Walsh Micay. She was one of the most incredible woman I have ever met. Kind, caring, loving and so much fun. And loved how she always spoke her mind and you always knew where you stood. Fabulous cook, host, loving wife, fabulous mother and grandmother. She adored all her children and grandchildren so much. Was so proud of them and share so many experiences with me and the rest of the Romoli gals. When I had cancer 19 years ago, Joan came to visit me in the hospital and brought me a white Teddy Bear. To this day, that Teddy Bear remains on my bed, and always will. Rest in Peace my Love. Forever and always in my heart.

I love you with all my heart Grandma. Thank you for being a second mother to be and filling my life with memories I will cherish for ever. I promise to never stop smiling, having fun and working hard. You were always an inspiration to me.
