ROCKY BUCKMASTER

1956-2023

Rocky was born in Winnipeg, predeceased by his parents Ed and Marie (Dion) Buckmaster.  Left to mourn his memory are: his wife Jacquie; his children: Shannon Kimpel, Clint (Jen), and Ryan (Tina); grandchildren Hunter and Jade; his sister Linda; as well as extended family and friends.

He spoke of fond memories of his childhood years spent at his uncle's cabin in Lac du Bonnet with his dad, eating garlic! In later years he continued his passion for camping at Wallace Lake. He liked to take his camaro-style boat on the lake or river for water skiing. He enjoyed canoeing and portaging with his friend Rob and son Ryan.

In his younger years Rocky forged loyal friendships, some lasting many decades.

Having lost both his parents in the same year in his early 20s, he took on the care of and provided for his little sister, his new wife and her two children, Shannon and Clint, who he grew to love as his own. Taking responsibility for loved ones was very important to Rocky. He had a tough life, but he came through for his children and loved spending time with them. He loved his children enough to give them the space they needed to grow up, each in his and her own time, in their own way. He was so proud of them, and was happy to see his sister Linda succeed in her chosen profession of nursing.

Starting in his youth he would often cycle from one end of the city to the other to get to work. He worked for Winnipeg Transit and retired after 34 years of service. Then in 1992 Rocky found himself on his own and bought himself a house. It was at this time, while driving the bus, that he met Jacquie, the love of his life, and quickly became hers.

Rocky bought a house in St. Vital which he and Jacquie spent years renovating together. Together they began to travel to foreign tropical paradises:  Mazatlan (with Ryan), Costa Rica, Cancun. Rocky was always up for an adventure and had the travel bug. If we encountered something iffy in our travels, Rocky would say playfully, “I skeered!” or “It’s and adventure!” They explored life together.

Rocky worked in the window business for many years, where he became well acquainted with and admired by his many customers.

Rocky’s love of cuisine and culinary arts had their beginnings in his very early years. He loved to be in the kitchen helping his mom bake cookies at an early age. A passion for cooking continued throughout his lifetime. Many family gatherings were graced by his amazing food. He could talk to anybody and everybody for hours about how to cook things, spices, etc. Rocky was also a cook at the Assiniboine Conservatory for several years.

Evenings at Leo and Sylvia’s were filled with fantastic dinners and nights of games and laughter, which made Rocky feel like part of the family. Rocky and Jacquie also hosted holiday dinners themselves, with games. He was a foodie, to which Jacquie would joke that she was a Food Network widow, not a hockey widow.  He loved trying foods from other nationalities. Rocky loved to listen to Jacquie and her sister Monica sing and play the keyboard, and was occasionally baffled by their crazy laughter.

Rocky loved campfires at Birdshill Park; long walks along the trails with his girl, Jacquie; gazing at the stars; downhill skiing; boating.

Rocky was unique and kind and well-liked by everyone. He had a great sense of humour and made us all laugh a lot.

A special thanks to Dr. Inglis, Dr. Marcus Blouw, and the compassionate ICU staff and nurses Naomi and Sarah, and Surgical Day Care staff at the Grace Hospital for caring for our Rocky. We were blessed to have you on his team!

A private celebration of Rocky's life will be held. For those unable to attend the service, a video recording of the program will be posted here, on this page, shortly after the service.

The family encourages the sharing of stories, memories and condolences by using the comment section on this tribute page. As well, there will also be a physical memory box at the service.

From Jacquie:  Oh my Rocky, you were so precious to me, and I will never forget you. You were warm, loving, forgiving, loyal and so good-natured. It was an honour and a privilege to care for you. There will never be anyone quite like you in my life. I will miss you terribly - I already do! I love you, my "Bijou."

So sad that I'm just finding out now (six months past) about Rocky. I worked with him at WTS for many years. Very fond memories of a couple guys vacations we took to Mexico. Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. We had some very adventurous trips. Sad that we hadn't reconnected in all these years since. I've never met you, Jaquie, but i offer my sincere condolences.

I’ve tried to leave a comment a number of times, but it has been difficult for me as I always considered Rocky as one of my really good friends.I was deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Rocky passing and I regret that as the years passed by it had been a long time since we got together to enjoy each others company.I met Rocky in 1992 we lived at Woodydell apartments, Rocky on the 1st floor and I on the 3rd .We used to walk our dogs together,he would walk Max and I would walk Ziggy.I remember how happy and proud he was when he purchased his house in St.Vital.Rocky was always in a good mood and I will never forget his laugh.I remember asking him to be my Best man at my wedding and I will always remember him saying “I would be honoured to be your best man”.Rocky was a good, honest, hard working guy that I always looked up to and I will never forget.I will miss you my friend.

Ya, we were young men in our 20’s when we met. Working for the city, thought we owned the world.  We spent a lot of time together, lived a lot of life.  I try to think of something outstanding or memorable that I could talk about and find my mind drifting off to different stories, all kinds of things…and then a stupid smirk on my face when I snap back. So much life was conquered, always there for me and me for him…we were friends, brothers. We might not have seen each other much in the last few years but our friendship was such that we could have lunch after a couple of years and just carry on and catch up like we were never away.  Rocky’s name is notorious for coming up in conversations. People who’ve never met him, now know him. My brothers and I still have these “remember when you, Rocky and I….” moments quite often as well.  The one thing I will tell you about Rocky Buckmaster…the world is a sadder, more lonely place without him.  The last time we communicated, March 2022, he found out my mom had moved in with me. He said “say hi to your mom for me”. I’ll miss him, I’m keeping that text. ❤️

So sorry to hear of Rocky's passing.   I worked with Rocky at Winnipeg Transit for many years and enjoyed his stories and humour.   I worked a shift for him  once, when a passenger got on the bus and showed me a transfer that was expired.  When I pointed that out to him, he said,"Rocky said the transfer was good for 3 days."  This clearly shows Rocky's kind and caring nature!   My deepest condolences to you, Jacquie and your family.

To Jacquie and the family of Rocky Buckmaster, I send my most sincere condolences.   While I've known Jacquie for a lifetime, I only had the pleasure of meeting Rocky a few times.  He was so outgoing and friendly and clearly devoted to his wife and family.  I can't even imagine how large a hole this leaves in your hearts and your lives.  He was clearly a very special man.  May God provide you all with comfort and peace.   ❤

Sorry for your loss. He was one of the fun ones to talk with at the transit garage. Had many a laugh over the driving bus and regular passengers that made the job enjoyable.

So very sorry to hear of Rocky’s passing and our sincere sympathies are with Jacquie and their family. We were neighbours in St. Vital and have fond memories of Rocky and Jacquie. So many years ago, but always remember Rocky’s kindness and good humour, especially when our indoor kitty would occasionally escape and end up high in one of our trees!  It was our first home and we were fortunate to have Rocky and Jacquie next door.

My sincerest condolences. From the first time that I met him, through my brother Wayne, he treated me like his brother. The 3 of us worked for Winnipeg Transit for many years. I still remember the time, years ago when Rocky, myself and another friend traveled to Acapulco. It was my first time there and Rocky took me under his wing and showed me what Acapulco had to offer! It was one of my most favourite trips. I will never forget that. That's the type of person that he was to me. A big brother.
