LAURA RUTH BURNS

(née THOMPSON)

August 3, 1961 - June 25, 2023

Peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, Laura passed away June 25th at the age of 61 years.

Laura is survived her by her loving husband of 39 years, Patrick, daughter Rachel (Curtis), sons Stephen (Holly), Graham, and two beautiful grandchildren Florence and Brett. Also survived by her two sisters Joan Stolar (Richard) and Dawn Thompson, her very close friend Nancy Collins plus her in-laws and many nieces and nephews. In addition, her beloved dog Sadie who provided so much inspiration and comfort to her these last number of years.

She was predeceased by her parents Donald and Katharine Thompson.

Laura worked in various administrative capacities over the years including St Charles Country Club where she met Patrick, the United Way Winnipeg, Sask. Lotteries, and various Churches in the St. James area and most recently Tetra Tech.

Her happiest times and fondest memories were of staying home and being a devoted mother to her 3 wonderful children. To her, this was her greatest joy and the best time in her life. Family and her children were always her priority.

She was always very grateful for the wonderful upbringing her parents provided to her and her sisters Joan and Dawn.

In her younger years, Laura loved her times spent at Betula and White Lakes, and always enjoyed attending movies with family and friends. Laura later became interested in sports as she followed closely all the activities of her children, becoming an avid fan of both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Jets.

Laura fought long and hard, displaying tremendous courage, never once complaining to anyone.

A big thank you to everyone who assisted and supported her over the years- particularly Cancer Care Manitoba, Dr. Grenier and her team, Dr. Ogaranko and his team, and the nurses and staff at Grace Hospital Cancer Care and the incredible team in the Palliative Care unit at St. Boniface Hospital that took such wonderful care of Laura the last few weeks.

A very special thank you to Cheryl and all the ladies in her Cancer Care support group that became such an important part of her life over the last number of years. And of course, family and friends that stepped up to offer assistance during such a difficult time. We are so lucky to have that.

A celebration of Life will be held at the Victoria Inn, 1808 Wellington Avenue in Winnipeg on Wednesday July 5th at 2pm, followed by refreshments.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E 0V9.

So sad to learn of Laura’s death.  She was the most wonderful administrative assistant - bright, caring, capable, and utterly dependable.  It was a sad day when she left for a full time job. She was as well, all the things you wrote about  in the obituary. Particularly her love for her husband and family, and the way she honoured her parents.  What a woman.  What a loss.  God be with you in your grieving.

Pat, we were very saddened to hear of Laura’s passing. It’s been a long time since we’ve spoke, but we will always remember her gentle and kind soul. She was truly a wonderful person. Fond memories of those St Charles days with the group.

We were so sorry to hear of Laura's passing.  She was a gem of a gal.  She was a pleasure to have in the Junior choir at Silver Heights United Church and later as an adult working in the church in various positions.  She also worked very hard at the new church Prairie Spirit.  Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.  She will be missed by all who knew her. Sincerely, Mary Benedictson/HarveySchmidt and family.

I have many great memories from childhood off spending time with the Thompsons from spending time at the cottage to travelling across the prairies and camping along the way. Many laughs shared over the years. I have you all in my thoughts.

Pat, Graham, Rachel and Stephen I am so sorry for your loss! Laura was such a lovely lady with a great sense of humour!  I met Laura through Wendy McBey when we belonged to the ‘200 Club’. When it was Laura’s turn for her Club 200 theme we had just adopted our little boy. Laura decided her theme would be a baby shower for me! I will never forget her thoughtfulness in doing that for me! Laura fought so hard to be there for her family as long as possible. What a tough cookie she was! RIP Laura 🙏🏻💐❤️

Such fun times we had while growing up. I can picture Laura galloping on her horse during a shared trip to Banff. Such a warm and beautiful smile.  Thinking about all of you and sending hugs.
