BETTY “DAWN” CROSS-BARON
(née Zimmerman)
September 30, 1956 – February 16, 2025
On Sunday, February 16 2025, we said a heart-breaking good-bye to Betty Dawn (Zimmerman) Cross-Baron, our dearly loved wife, sister, nana, aunt, niece, step-mom, god-mother and friend to many. Dawn passed away at the age of 68 years at Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg, MB.
Dawn was born in Toronto, Ontario on September 30th, 1956 to Norma and Garry Zimmerman. She grew up in Regina SK along with her sisters Lynda, Heather, Sandy and brother Rob. As a child Dawn was always fun-loving and carefree.
Later in life, she moved and lived in Saskatoon, Yorkton and eventually settled in Winnipeg where she met and married her husband Doug Baron.
Throughout her life, Dawn would always see the best in people and could connect with any person, young or old. She made people feel special and loved, with dance parties, games and prizes, cooking a wonderful meal, designing and sewing clothes and dog booties, crafts with the kids, Dawn bucks and the Dawn Store.
She made a positive difference in many lives working as a case worker for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg.
Dawn was profoundly creative and artistic. Her talents included drawing, sewing, poetry, piano, cooking, fashion design, and so much more.
Her happy place was at Heather Game and Fishing at Lac du Bonnet, where she enjoyed tending her flower garden, and where she had many close friends. When family visited she always made it a special event.
She especially loved and enjoyed family time in Calgary, Kimberley, and Birthdays, Christmas and making gingerbread men in Regina.
Dawn was predeceased by her parents Garry Zimmerman and Norma Zimmerman, her daughter Shauna Baron and nephew Matthew Surerus.
Dawn is survived by her husband Doug Baron, her dog Jetta, sisters Lynda, Heather (Tery), Sandy (Rollie) and brother Rob; sister and brother-in-law Carrie and Danny; step-sons; grandchildren; great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; aunts, uncle, cousins, god-children and many wonderful friends.
The family would like to thank all the staff on 2W at Concordia Hospital, and the Palliative Team for their compassionate and excellent care.
A Celebration of Dawn’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, or an animal rescue of your choice.
Dawn was our light, and our world will never be as bright without her. Love you to the moon and back, and Jupiter too.
Dawn’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I am so sad to hear of Dawn's passing. She was our case worker for Big Brothers and Big sisters. My little and I are still very much connected and we consider eachother family almost 20 years later. If it wasn't for Dawn our paths would not have crossed and I would have missed out on a very special relationship. I am so thankful she put us together. You will be greatly missed Dawn, sending my deepest condolences to your friends and family.

When we think of Dawn we remember her ready smile and laughter like her dad.
Too bad as cousins you couldn't get together more often because of the long distances between us.
Dawn called us quite a few times over the years. It was always a pleasure hearing from her.
It might help to know that we offered a special prayer for Dawn in church yesterday.
Once again our sinsere condolences at the loss of your beloved sister.

Dawn was such a giver of time. Over the past few years she dedicated her time to my best friend Shauna Baron who was so lucky to have Dawn as a Step Mom..Dawn would call me in Vancouver and set up a 3 way video chat so we could all bake together and laugh. Dawn and a few of us planned a trip to Mexico after Shauna died so we could Celebrate Shauna on her 50th Birthday. Unfortunately, Dawn was sick and sadly we couldn't go. Dawn was very private about this last phase in her life. She was the Epitomy of self respect. She also didn't want others to worry about her. I sent Dawn a Bluejay for her Christmas tree which was our way of keeping Shauna close! Dawn, you'll be missed by so many. Thank you to Dawn's siblings for keeping me in the loop at the end.
Fly Freely with no more pain. Love always,
Anne 🐦 ❤️
