VICTOR PLASESKI EDWARDS

September 9, 1937 - October 2, 2024

Peacefully on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, Vic Edwards passed away at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 87 years.

Left to cherish Vic’s memory are his son Lorne; his granddaughter Victoria (Dillion Contois); his grandson Hudson; his brother Robert “Bob” Plaseski (Lori); and many nephews and nieces, including Cindy Plaseski, and dear friends, Nan and Bob Mulvey. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce Christine Edwards; brothers, Joe (Minnie), Paul (Emily), and Nick (Mae) Plaseski; and parents, Michael and Lilian.

Vics working life started at CN Rail in Portage la Prairie. Next, he began carving a path in radio at CFRY in Portage la Prairie. His radio career led him to become a news anchor and sometimes news director at CKRC and CKY in Winnipeg, CKSL in London, Ontario, CHML in Hamilton, and CJME in Regina. Many will remember Vics patented hard news delivery. However, behind that tough news voice was a man of compassion, helpfulness and kindness. He truly led by example.

It was during these years in radio, that together with his wife Joyce, he became supportive of his son Lorne who became a competitive figure skater. Vic became President of several figure skating clubs, and at one time served as Chairman of the Manitoba Figure Skating Section. As a professional announcer Vic was often called upon to announce at figure skating competitions and ice shows. Vic also sharpened skates. Busloads of skates

would arrive on his doorstep from towns across Manitoba.

Vic joined his brother Nick at Norquay Printers which served Southern Manitoba with printing services as well as producing the Central Manitoba Shopper and News. He also worked for Delta Home Furnishings, and re-entered radio at CFRY where he joined his son Lorne as the Morning Show Team. For 3 special years, Vic was the host of the morning show, while Lorne delivered the news and sports before moving on to a lengthy career at 680 CJOB in Winnipeg.

Vic wound up his working career as the Secretary-Manager of the Fort la Reine Museum from 1997 to 2001. Both Vic and Joyce worked diligently on the Museum’s newsletter which was much valued in the community. After retiring from that position, Vic became the driving force to revitalize the CP Rail Station in Portage la Prairie as Chair of Portage Heritage Inc.

Vic also took great pleasure in mineral exploration. It was a hobby he enjoyed with his brothers. While they were always on the lookout for the next great vein of gold, the group of them knew deep down the true treasure was the time they got to spend together.

His remaining years were spent enjoying his acreage in the Gainsborough District which he treasured. He also took great delight in spending time with and encouraging his grandchildren, Victoria and Hudson.

Donations in Vic's memory are graciously accepted by the Manitoba Grassroots Bursary Trust that supports excellence in amateur figure skating in Manitoba. Cheques can be sent to:

In the 1970's when Vic returned to CFRY in Portage la Prairie, our kitchen radio was always on CFRY. The Morning Show was a "variety" program that often included recipes. At that time we had a budgie bird named Pepper who also listened to the radio because when Vic mentioned the ingredient pepper, the bird would recognize his name and chirp. I told Vic about this and on days when the recipes did not contain pepper, Vic would say good morning to his friend Pepper. Very few people knew who he was talking to but Pepper knew!
