HOWARD GATES

April 14, 1935 - March 8, 2018

Howard (Howie) Gates died in his home on March 8, 2018 in Winnipeg, Manitoba a short time after being diagnosed with cancer.  He was 82.

Howie was born on April 14, 1935 in Virden, Manitoba to parents, Stephen and Violet Gates.  He finished grade 11, supporting himself by working on a farm, and proudly graduated with a GED diploma at age 50.  He served in the Air Force for three years and travelled and worked across the country in many different jobs until settling in the Yukon and becoming a professional miner.  Later, he worked for the Yukon government until his retirement in 1999. He married Doris Gates (nee Robinson) in 1966, and they were happily married over fifty years.

They lived together in Dawson City, Clinton Creek, Faro, and Whitehorse, Yukon, before retiring to Clinton, British Columbia, then a final move to Winnipeg to be closer to family. Wherever he lived, he volunteered to make the community a better place. He spent his time taking care of his family and never missed curling of any kind. He spent his whole life working hard and volunteering harder.

He was loved by all who knew him, especially his nine grandchildren.

He is survived by his two brothers, Donald and Norman; wife, Doris; and children Vincent, Kent, Betty, Stephen and Trefor.  He is predeceased by his mother and father; brothers, James and Elburn; and sister-in-law Dolly.

Howie chose to be cremated and his ashes will be saved to be buried with his love, Doris.

There will be one celebration of life at the common room in their apartment building in Winnipeg at 110 Adamar Road on Saturday, March 17, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

There will be second a celebration of life for Howie on May 13, 2018 in Clinton, British Columbia, at the Legion Hall from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.  All are welcome to attend and celebrate Howie’s life.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society, or even better, go out of your way to help a neighbour like Howie always would.
