FRANK DOUGLAS HANNA

April 30, 1927 – March 14, 2025

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Frank Douglas Hanna, who passed on March 14, 2025, at the age of 97, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Gladstone, Manitoba, in 1927, Frank was the last surviving of 14 siblings - twelve brothers and two sisters.

At the young age of fifteen, Frank left home to serve his country in World War II. His dedication to duty and service was a testament to his humble and hardworking nature. After the war, Frank spent his career working at the Canadian Pacific Railway where he held various positions, including passenger train Porter, Clerical Worker, Claims Inspector, and Mobile Checker, retiring after 44 years of loyal service (1942-1986).

Frank was deeply committed to family life, and throughout the years, family summer camping trips became a cherished tradition. He established a beloved camping spot at Bird River, where he purchased a trailer and a boat and introduced his family to the joys of camping and water activities, including waterskiing. His enthusiasm for ‘getting out’ in the summer didn’t stop there; Frank later bought a motorhome, which allowed him to travel within North America, creating lasting memories with his loved ones. He also took a few cruises, went to Panama in February 2012 and more recently travelled on the train to Vancouver in October 2012 and April 2014.

Frank was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished his family above all else. He was known for his ability to make every family gathering special, especially at Christmas always playing the role of Santa Clause – a childhood memory so meaningful.

Frank was well known for being a handyman, and for his love of working with his hands building things and always puttering around either attending to improvements on his own property or working for others, including his children. This he loved! Whether he was tending to his home or helping others, Frank’s generosity knew no bounds. When not working or puttering around, he was a casual cook at home and a good one at that. His relaxation time was watching hockey or football and when not in the house he loved just sitting and basking in the sun.

Frank’s legacy is one of resilience, unwavering love, and devotion to his family. His teachings and grounded values will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was a humble man that appreciated what he had and what he worked hard for.

For many years, Frank called 111 Greenwood Ave in Winnipeg’s St. Vital neighborhood his home. His home was ‘his castle’. He treasured it deeply until February 21, 2023, when he moved to Golden Links Lodge to be with his beloved wife, Alda, whom he had been married to for 65 years.

Together, Frank and his wife, shared a lifetime of love, commitment, and very hard work. This obituary would not be complete without mentioning his persistent love, caring, and affection for his wife throughout his life in both good and hard times. Together they marched through life managing all challenges as they arose.

Frank is lovingly remembered and will be greatly missed by his wife, Alda Hanna; his son, Douglas Hanna (Sam); his daughter, Heather Hanna (Laura); his grandchildren, Terra Dreger (Terry) and Jordan Hanna (Kara); and his great grandchildren, August and Noah Dreger. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, and many extended family members who will miss him dearly.

A family-centered Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025. In keeping with Frank’s wishes, there will be no formal service.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to various Health Care staff at Golden Links Lodge that took such good care of Frank – you know who you are.

Frank’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I was lucky enough to have met Doug and Molly Hanna and being able to give them both loving care. Mr Hanna was always happy with the best ever smile on his face and he would love when I would take just few moments to just sit with him and visit. Mr Hanna was and always will be one of my favourite people I met and cared for! His family was just as special to me and anyone could see that there was lots of love 💕 between them all!!! I'm so sorry for your great loss and you will all be remembered in my prayers!!

My dad was so special to me. He was dad, yes, but my friend and mentor that was always there to guide me with his humble well grounded roots. I recall him helping me with my ABC's lying in bed beside him. I recall him getting me into my first car. I recall him getting me my first job before University. I recall him helping me with my many houses (building basements and decks). Most importantly, I recall him, just accepting me for who I was.

Being close with parents, my life was very connected to them through constant visits, travelling together, caring for my children, and supporting me throughout my career and in life!

The memories are real and will live on but the loss is very painful as dad was like a 'buddy'. I already miss him so much. He will be in my heart and thoughts forever continually influencing my life.

I love you Dad

Always have these memories with uncle Doug when I traveled across Canada and I was a little kid and I stayed at his house and he put my car in the garage and help me work on it to get me back on the road to get across Canada. Uncle Doug was a very kind, genuine man same with his wife, Molly she fed me and put a roof over my head. I miss you, uncle you were amazing man and you will always be on my mind. Glad I saw you travelling across Canada coming back from Ontario this summer this is a great picture of you with snoopy. Love you always, your great nephew Derek. rest in peace Uncle. 🕊️

It's with a heavy heart to hear of Doug Hanna's passing. When I first met Mr & Mrs Hanna I was welcomed in their home with open arms. Every visit was like having a second family. Always good conversation and big smiles. The picture I share is of one when watching a Jets game with Doug. We cheered loudly when they scored and just as loud yelling at the tv when a bad play was called. Doug introduced me to a shot of his brandy. Anyone that knew him knew he only drank the good stuff. Needless to say my face was red for a good 30mins. His laughter and smile was infectious. Always a pleasure to be around and such a wonderful man. He spoke so proudly of his children. I will miss you Mr Hanna. Until we meet again, this ones for you! Sincerely, Tracey Rosnow
