Jeanette Hardy
JEANETTE HARDY
(née Peterson)
January 15,1930 - May 8,2020
Jeanette was born into the loving family of Julius and Teresa Peterson and grew up on Noble Avenue in Elmwood along with her siblings, Gordon, Jack, Mary, Ross and Bryan. The family spent wonderful summers at their Boundary Creek cottage at Winnipeg Beach and Jeanette never tired of telling stories and tales of their summer life at the lake.
Jeanette worked as a bookkeeper until marrying and moving to Ottawa. As an RCAF wife and mother, Jeanette became very efficient in moving from base to base in southern Ontario with her husband George, a photographer with the Golden Hawks aeronautical team. George travelled around the world – unusual in the 1950’s - so Jeanette learned to be very self-reliant. Each summer, with three little girls in tow she travelled home on the train to spend the warm months at the beloved Winnipeg Beach cottage. She was an accomplished diver and synchronized swimmer who enjoyed hours of fun playing off the pier with her extended family.
After returning to Winnipeg in the early 60’s Jeanette led an active life volunteering with Girl Guides, sewing beautiful clothes and raising her family of five, busy children. Jeanette was a wonderful cook who hosted huge dinners for her extended family and everyone’s friends. She had a fierce spirit, unforgettable laugh and a passion for ideas, politics, books and family. She was an avid reader, an excellent baker, gardener, knitter, sewer, swimmer, curler and golfer. Jeanette was active in politics from a young age and inspired her children to make the world a better place.
In 1975, Jeanette went west to Calgary, Alberta with her husband George and their three youngest children. Upon returning to Winnipeg a few years later, she used to laugh and tell us that she had moved 32 times and that’s why she didn’t have much junk in her home!
Jeanette (Jan) spent almost 20 years retired in Aspen Park, Gimli, Mb. She spent hours knitting gorgeous Icelandic sweaters for the family, gardening, golfing, curling, playing bridge and volunteering with numerous organizations. She was a member of the Aspen Park Board, President of the Women’s Auxiliary at Johnson Memorial Hospital and a volunteer at New Horizons.
Jeanette moved back to Winnipeg to live at River Ridge Retirement Residence, but a broken hip curbed her independence and she spent her last years at Beacon Hill Lodge on Fort Street. In January, her extended family gathered in Winnipeg to celebrate her 90th birthday.
Jeanette is survived by her children, Patricia (Tim Schouten), Lori Whiteway (Dean), Linda Roberton, Jamie (Mona), and Robert (Cheryl Binning); six grandchildren, Kristjan Whiteway (Maria), Jon Whiteway (Julianna) and Stefan Whiteway (Leah), Christine Rachar (Jason) and Jesse and Brianna Hardy; four great grandchildren, Rowyn and Iris Whiteway, Kennady Whiteway, and Tyson Rachar. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, son-in-law Mark Roberton, great-grandson Remy Whiteway and grandson, Scott Roberton.
Aunty Nette will be lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Her pies, cakes and cupcakes will also be remembered and missed by all.
Thank you to the staff at Beacon Hill Lodge who took such loving care of her.
Jeanette has been cremated and will be interred with her infant son, Gordon, at Elmwood Cemetery when we are all able to gather in her memory. Her family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by watching the photo-biography above.
