GERALD “GERRY” HOURD

January 16, 1938 – March 11, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather at the age of 87 years old.

Gerry is predeceased by his father and mother, Stanley and Annie (Hill); his brothers, Albert and Ray; his sister, Audrey; and his sons, Raymond and Curtis.

Gerry leaves behind his loving wife and soul mate of 68 years, Paulette; his son, Rod (Colleen); Daughter-in-laws Colleen (Curtis) and Cindy (Ray) his grandchildren, Adam (Jessica), Colin (Shannon), Chase (Kyleigh), and Cass (Riley); great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Oakley, Jaycee, Quinn, and Clark; his sisters-in-law June (Rene), Donna, and Marleen. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews with whom he always kept in touch.

Gerry was born on January 16, 1938, raised in Badger, Manitoba. He moved to Winnipeg at the age of 5, where he lived in the Brooklands area with his family.

Gerry attended Brooklands School, where he met Paulette. They married on March 17, 1956, and began their life’s journey of raising a wonderful family.

Gerry worked for Western Gypsum, Winnipeg Transit, the Metro Park Police, and the City of Winnipeg Claims Department. In 1976, Gerry and Paulette moved to their forever home in Ile Des Chenes, where they became involved in raising horses and spent many years enjoying the company of wonderful people also involved in the horse world in Manitoba. Gerry retired in 1994, and they started their own embroidery business, working from their home until his passing.

Gerry enjoyed coaching hockey, especially with the St. Vital Victorias (MMJHL), the Grendell 9–10-year-old, IDC Royals, and the IDC Elks Senior Men’s team. He dedicated countless hours volunteering his time at the local rinks and community center. Gerry was a member of the Winnipeg Police Revolver Club for many years and enjoyed the pistol competitions.

He also spent many years traveling and spending summers in BC with his sister Audrey's family, as well as traveling with his dear friends Ed and Betty in California. Eventually they settled in Apache Junction, Arizona, for winter vacations with many new and old friends. Enjoying the theme dance nights, Friday happy hour’s, card games, and golfing. Gerry also enjoyed fishing and watching the Jets.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 603 Wellington Cresent, the First Universalist Church of Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.

We also want to express our heartfelt thanks to the caring team members at Cancer Care HSC and Victoria Hospital, as well as the EMT's, emergency staff at St. Boniface Hospital and the wonderful staff at Ethical Death Care.

"Forever in our hearts."

Gerry’s family kindly requests that all his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honor his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories in the comment section on this page.

Our condolences and love to Auntie Paulette, Rod, Colleen, and family. Uncle Gerry was always someone I looked up to. His always smiling demeanor, his integrity, and his love of family, were examples to follow. I remember their many visits to BC, and Dad's farm. Auntie Paulette's fear of driving through the Rogers Pass, Gerry's love of horses, and our cousins coming to see and stay with us. Our drives to visit them were always an adventure as well. I am so grateful I was able to chat with him recently, and to see his smile again. Gone too soon from a life well lived. May memories only bring smiles. Love and hugs, Gerald and Wendy.

Sending our deepest sympathy to Paulette and Rod and Colleen and the family. We we're so saddened to hear of Gerry's passing but will forever cherish all the fun times we shared (and all the card games you taught us.).His piercing blue eyes and those insane dimples he had when he smiled will be forever etched in our memories. Wish I could give him a "nosia" one last time ❤️ RIP Gerry.

Our condolences to the family.

Great guy with a big heart. With his guidance and coaching we got to play some great hockey, which are lasting memories for many. Every time I ran into him he always asked about past team mates on how they were doing. These were great times.

He'll be missed.
