BERNARD “BERNIE” JOUNOT

September 7, 1950 - June 19, 2024

Bernie passed away suddenly on June 19th, known to most of us as one of the happiest, fittest and most capable 70+ year olds around.  His life motto was to work hard, play harder, love and live every day to the fullest.

Bernie had a Joie De Vivre that made everyone lucky enough to know him feel blessed and loved in his presence. These qualities, along with his knowledge of the outdoors and his handy ways have been passed on to his grandkids and will live on through all of us. Dad loved building, staying fit, diving, fishing, fine foods and wine, and dedicated most of his time to his family.  His favorite hobbies were shared with his 4 grandsons who meant the world to him.

Over the decades, he enjoyed many trips abroad with friends and family, creating lifelong memories for so many.  Between the house and cottage, France, and Mexico, Bernie had so many gangs of friends that it was hard for us to keep up! His family would like you all to know that he had a heart full of love for us all and that his love will always be there for us to keep sharing.

Bernie will be missed by is partner Huguette, his kids Robert (Megan) and Brigitte (Paul) and his grand children. He was pre-deceased by his wife Carmelle and father Henri.  A celebration for Bernie will be held at the Belgium Club (407 Provencher Blvd. in Winnipeg) on Wednesday June 26th from 2-5PM.

Bernie’s family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

I first met Bernie when my son became engaged to his daughter. He and Carmelle hosted a dinner party at their home in honour of the coming together of our two families. Both he and Carmelle were so very welcoming and kind. As the years passed, and the grandkids arrived, it became more and more apparent what a remarkable man he was. He was always there for them, often with a helping hand and just the best smile. I marveled at his abilities and his energy. You will be very missed, Bernie.

I met Bernie at Kyle's gym 4 years ago. I was impressed by him right from the beginning. He was quiet but I could feel the strength of his spirit...knew who he was, solid, kind, generous, friendly. My regret is I didn't get to know him better. Peace be with you Bernie. Wishing you continued great adventures on the other side!

In the flood of the century in 1997, we needed a dike around our house, south of the floodway. Bernie quickly volunteered to help with the building of our wooden dike structure, erected in one day with a great crew of volunteers. Without Bernie's leadership and building skills, I don't know how we could have accomplished anything and certainly not as quickly! His kindness to us at a very stressful time was fantastic and never to be forgotten. He will be missed by so many!

Bernie JOUNOT was my friend.and I am going to miss him terribly. We spent literally hundreds of hours underwater together off the island of Cozumel and every dive trip was brightened by his laughter. He scared the heck out of me on one dve by deciding to stay longer in Devil's Throat looking for the rest of his group. Nicole and I just wanted to hug him when he surfaced. I will miss you Mon Ami.
