MABEL “LORRAINE” MACLEOD

(née BELL)

December 14, 1932 – August 4, 2024

It is with deep sadness and profound love that we announce the passing of Lorraine MacLeod on August 4, 2024, at the age of 91.

Lorraine was the beloved wife of the late Angus MacLeod and a devoted mother to Bruce (Debbie), Heather (Greg), and Angus. She was a proud grandmother to Brittany (Alex), Jaime (Scott) and Alex (Erika); and cherished great-grandmother to Miles and Mae. Lorraine will also be remembered fondly by her brother Elgin; sister-in-law Isabelle (Doug); brother-in-law John; and many nieces, nephews, their families, and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Robert (Bob) and Florence Bell; her brothers, Arthur and Bill; her sister Dorothy (Paul) Leduc; and her sisters-in-law, Simone and Marie Bell, Christine, Lu, and Maureen MacLeod.

Lorraine was born on Dec. 14, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was the third of five children. Her family lived in Kane and moved to Morris two years later.  In her younger years, Lorraine was actively involved in softball, hockey, figure skating, CGIT, Rebekah Lodge and junior choir. Lorraine was named high school Carnival Queen in 1950.  From 1950-1962, Lorraine worked with an agricultural firm as their bookkeeper. Lorraine continued to give her time, talents and energy when she became a CGIT leader, taught Sunday School, played in the Morris Harmony Band and coached figure skating for 60 children, culminating in an annual ‘Ice Carnival Revue’ from 1953 to 1957.

Lorraine and Angus, moved to Winnipeg in 1957, following their marriage. In 1962, they moved into their new home in St. Vital. Volunteer opportunities continued, and with a young family who delved into sports and music, it was a happy but busy time. Family camping trips were a special time, traveling across Canada and the United States. The family joined the Winnipeg Canoe Club, where the children were introduced to golf, canoeing, kayaking, badminton and tennis. Golf soon became their favourite sport. Angus and Lorraine enjoyed numerous trips across continental Europe as well as a golfing trip with daughter Heather in Scotland, playing the famous Old St. Andrews golf course, the Jubilee course and numerous others.

Lorraine loved to volunteer with many organizations including the Manitoba Games Council, Manitoba Ladies Golf Association and Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame. Lorraine served as President of Manitoba Ladies Golf Association during 1987-88 and on many committees with the national CLGA in 1982, 1986, 1996 and 2001. In 1991, Lorraine chaired the Canadian Ladies Amateur Championship held at Glendale Golf and Country Club. In 2001, Lorraine was presented with the CLGA Distinguished Service Award and recognized by Golf Manitoba for over 25 years of service.  In 2014, Lorraine was inducted into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame as a builder of the sport.

Lorraine was also deeply dedicated to her faith communities, including St. Vital United Church, St. Mary’s Road United, and United Church in Meadowood. She served and chaired numerous committees and was a member of the United Church Women, receiving Life Membership in 1998.

Lorraine was an avid historian. She researched and compiled both the Bell and MacLeod family history. Lorraine also researched the history of ladies’ golf at the Winnipeg Canoe Club and her work was featured in the Manitoba Links book by J. Alan Hackett.

In 2005, the Friendship Force of Manitoba had its beginnings and Lorraine enjoyed the opportunity to host people from around the world as well as travel with the group.

Lorraine enjoyed traveling. In 2000, she visited with her sister Dorothy and Paul in Stittsville, ON and enjoyed skating all 7.2 km of the Rideau Canal. In 2001, Scotland was enjoyed with three friends. Ireland was next, traveling with her sisters-in-law Lu and Chris and six others. In 2007, a wonderful eleven-day cruise, through the Panama Canal. In 2008, she traveled to Portugal, Lisbon, Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco. In 2016, she traveled with Heather to Churchill.

Over the last number of years, Lorraine has pursued interest in pastoral care, swimming, reading, walking and whatever a day brings along. Most of all she enjoys bringing the family together, keeping up to date with her wonderful children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoying all the special times together.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at River Ridge II, Boulevard 2 South, for their kindness and compassion. They also thank Dr. Jaramillo, the nurses, palliative care personnel and home care staff for their dedicated care.

A celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, August 19, at United Church in Meadowood, 1111 Dakota Street. In honor of Lorraine’s vibrant spirit, please wear bright colors to the service.

Flowers gratefully declined. A donation in Lorraine’s memory may be made to United Church in Meadowood or a charity of your choice.

The service will be live streamed at ucim.org with the link available on Aug 19.

I have many fond memories of your Mom as she oversaw MLGA events(late 70's to mid 80's). She always had a smile and made you feel at ease during competitive events. She was a people person with a kind heart who went out her way to reconnect. Lucky you to have her as your Mom and Grandma. She was a gem. May your lives be filled with beautiful memories💫💖💫

I met Lorraine when she joined Friendship Force Manitoba. She was a very active member who contributed in many ways to our organization - always willing to help with hosting and keeping our History files in order, etc. etc. She was always ready with a warm greeting and her beautiful smile. My sincere sympathy.
