RICHARD MICHEL MARTEL

November 21, 1948 – September 30, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Michel Martel, our loving Husband, Dad, Pepère, on Saturday September 30, 2023, at the age of 74.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Alice (née Gervais); daughter Roxanne (Brent) Barrett and grandsons Samuel, Aidan, Matthew, Owen; daughter Rachelle and grandson Colton; siblings Rolande Wilcott, Marie Neveux, Georgette (Paul) Fontaine and sister-in-law Elva Martel; in-laws Betty (Hervé) Vermette, Lionel (Michele) Gervais, Denis Gervais, Annette (Tom) Westendorf, Anita Gervais, Pat (Maurice) Carriere; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Richard is predeceased by his parents Henri & Laura (née Dubé); siblings Ned (Phyllis) Martel, Maurice (Patsy) Martel, Charles Martel, Gabrielle (Gerard) Caille, brother in-laws Sylvio Wilcott & Norbert Neveux.

A country boy at heart, Richard grew up in St. Pierre-Jolys, MB. Richard and Alice met at the Goulet Street Salisbury House in 1968. They married in 1970. They enjoyed many adventures together. Richard’s work as an industrial mechanic (CWB), welder fitter and millwright moved them to Thompson, back to St. Pierre-Jolys, St. Malo, New Brunswick, and Petersfield before settling in Winnipeg in 1983 to continue raising their family. Due to illness in 2010, Richard reluctantly retired early from Arne’s Welding, a place where he enjoyed the work and his co-workers.

Dad was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether it was building a garage, deck, fence, putting together swing sets, fixing a washed-out road, or small jobs around the house, he was always there.

Richard had a great love of riding and looked forward to his many motorcycle road trips. Many were with his nephew Daniel Martel, friends Jacques & Denyse among others. He also enjoyed solo rides and made many friends along the way.

Richard had a passion for music. He enjoyed playing guitar and piano, singing, performing live music and jamming with his friends. He was creative and loved working with his hands. He enjoyed drawing, painting, woodworking, welding, baking pies, and perfecting his pizza dough recipe with Alice for their Saturday night pizza. A proud moment this summer was giving each of his family members handmade quilts he lovingly made. He passed on many of these interests to his grandkids encouraging them every step of the way.

Dad was a kind, empathetic and gentle soul. He enjoyed spending time with his family and sharing a good laugh with his great sense of humour.

In the later stage of his illness, he developed an obsession for building Lego which he spent many hours of quality time building with his grandkids, daughters, son-in-law and Alice.

A special thank you to Dr. Marie Loewen and Dr. James Johnston. Our family expresses a heart felt thank you to the entire staff of the palliative care team at Riverview Health Centre for your compassionate care.

As per Richard’s wishes, no formal service will be held.

Ride on Dad.

Go enjoy the day.

We love you.

Dear Alice & Family-- My sincere heartfelt condolences to you, in learning of Richard's passing...I have very happy memories of both of you with music sharing, playing guitar & singing together at my home when I lived in Winnipeg, as well as at other music get-togethers.  Richard was always so very kind, friendly & helpful to me, as I struggled to make a descent home in your city. Having retired now and back to Alberta, I will always have very fond memories of you and especially Richard singing and playing songs - the last time was at your daughter's house-warming celebration.... Richard sang & played with a Grandson joining him in his rendition of "Stormy Monday and St.James Infirmary"-- whenever I hear these two songs, I always think of Richard - noone played & sang them like he did! I am very sad to learn of Richard's passing- he was such a GOOD MAN!! Richard will be greatly missed among all the music friends that we all shared.  Please know that you both are very fondly remembered with Love, Cathy Melech ❤

We were so sad to hear of Uncle Rick's passing. We feel so grateful that we knew him for the kind, funny, thoughtful, talented, and cheerful person he was. At family get-togethers, he would always take the time to chat with us, and when you talked with Uncle Rick, he really made you feel like you mattered. His smiles and laughter were infectious. Auntie Alice, Roxanne, Rachelle, and family, we are so sorry for your loss. As an uncle, he was such a likeable person... As a dad, husband, and grandpa we can only imagine your love for him. We hope that the treasured memories of him help fill your hearts in this tough time. Please know we are thinking of you. Love Paul, Tammy, Blake, and Thomas Vermette.

I met Rick (and Alice) through music. He was always kind and a generous player for a newbie like me, and always had a ready smile and laugh. Whenever I hear the song You Ain't Going Nowhere, I think of Rick playing it. We also appreciated his talent as a welder; the plant hanger he made that was shaped like a guitar was a treasure. A life well lived. My sincere condolences to Alice and family.

Sincere condolences to Matante Alice, Roxanne, Rachelle and your families. Mononcle Richard was a special uncle to me but probably more of a big brother. Whether it was letting me hang out with him and his band “ The Mad Hatters” for practice when I was very young or in my teenage years where he once took me and Patrick on a canoe trip to Paint Lake in Thompson, Richard was patient and supportive. His big smile and sense of humour was always there for anyone who knew him and he shall be missed. Ron and Claire Martel

Deepest sympathies to matante Alice, Roxanne, Brent, Rachelle and grandkids. Since being a young kid, always thought of mononcle Richard as one cool guy! Met up with him once on way back from NW Ontario at a gas station in Clearwater Bay. He was enjoying a nice ride on his motorcycle. Always happy to have a chat and a smile you cannot duplicate. Thoughts are with the family.

Rick & I first started as co-workers. I would work at Martel's Machine Shop after school & since Rick lived in St. Malo he would give me a ride back. We would also work Saturday mornings & he would pick me up usually with a bottle between his legs.  Coke or Pepsi  that was his morning coffee LOL  Sometime later he became Uncle Rick as I married his niece. We spent a lot of time together playing cards & board games & even babysitting girls. It was the good old days however Rick & Alice moved to Wpg for work & we started our family & unfortunately life moved on separately. We would often say " we have to go visit Rick & Alice" but something would always come up & we would never go until last fall when we "TOOK THE TIME " to visit .  We could tell he was already hurting but we had a good visit.  That's where he broke the news. He started making quilts!!!   Yes Quilts !!  It was a shock to us as we always knew him as a welder, machinist, fabricator but thinking back we shouldn't be surprised as everything he touched he did with ease. It soon became show & tell with his quilts & then he brought one out & gave it to Diane. Of course the tears started flowing but he really wanted her to have it. It remains as one of her prized possessions . Actually we took a road trip to BC this spring to visit  Tante Rolande  & she made sure to pack Rick's quilt to show them. They were totally impressed !  My message to all of you is if you have a loved one you want to visit. please TAKE THE TIME & do it    Our Sympathy to you Alice ,Roxanne' Rachelle & family.  Lets stay in touch. Rest well Rick!!!

My sincere condolences  Alice, Roxanne, Rachelle, Brent and grandkids.  We rode many a mile, had great fishing trips, did plenty of family camping trips, tested many styles of pizzas (cast iron was my favorite) listening to you play your guitar around the campfire and singing those x-rated songs that could make us all blush.  Richard, Thank you!  You will be missed.

So very sorry for your loss, Alice, Roxanne, Rachelle and families. Richard was a great brother-in-law! So many fond memories of camping, fishing and casino trips.  I will miss his funny stories and sometimes, dirty jokes and his delicious pizza! He took pride in everything he did!  Richard was a talented, thoughtful guy in so many ways.  I will always cherish the wooden carving he did for me on my 40th birthday.  It was truly an honour knowing Richard.

Richard was a sweet, kind person. Every time he visited us or us him, the smile said it all. He was a man of many talents. Even during the later part of his life when the health took away some of the good times he had, biking, making his favourite pizza etc., he still had that smile. I will certainly miss him. I am sorry Alice and family for your loss.

To Alice and the family, we are very sorry for your loss. We will all miss him. Rick was a very talented man, from music, carvings, baking and his artistic creations with metal including retrofitting his bike with a home made rack that looked fabulous. I got to know Rick better with his sense of humour during our bike trips including getting caught in a hail storm on our way to Bemidji, Minnesota. In 2016 Rick and I had planned a trip to the Ozarks in late August when I got back from a Wedding in Vegas. When I got back to the Winnipeg airport, a few days before our planned departure, I checked my emails to find one from Rick telling me that he would not be able to join me. All he said was that pictures are worth a thousand words. When I opened the attachment, there was a photo or Rick on a stretcher at the hospital with facial bruises. Rick had been in a motorcycle accident which could have been a lot worse, but was bad enough that the Ozarks would have to wait. I'm sorry that we never got to do this trip, but we'll have to wait for our next life. Happy riding, Rick, we'll miss you Herve

The thing I remember the most about Richard, is when we would come and visit he would greet us with a a big welcoming smile. Always making us a delicious meal even when he was not at his best.  I have fond memories of him visiting us in BC and sitting out on our deck on a beautiful day playing guitar and singing with him.  I’ll always remember him as a talented kind brother in law.  To Alice and family, so sorry for your loss.  Annette Westendorf

Rick was a great guy and I have many fond memories of him and will be reminded of him daily when I look at the guitar plant hangers that he gifted and hand crafted  for us on our deck and as well as the wood carving he made of the cowboy at the bar that we have in our family Pom. Rick and I were able to play some guitar together and he loved old school blues.  Rick was a good singer.     We shared a lot of laughs,  talked about a lot of things,  like his hot peppers that he loved to grow,  music,  his motorcycle and enjoyed our trip with Alice and him to Mexico with the adventures we had there.  I’ll miss him.  I’m so sorry for Alice and the entire family for your loss.  Rick was such a great family man. …..
