Phyllis McIntosh
PHYLLIS DOROTHY MCINTOSH
(née LYE)
June 26, 1924 - April 17, 2023
Phyllis McIntosh, Wife, Mother, Sister, Nana, Nanny and Great Nana died peacefully on April 17, 2023 in her home surrounded by her family.
Phyllis was born on June 26, 1924 in Macgregor, Manitoba in her family home. She was the first of 4 born to Henry and Hazel Lye. Her memory will be cherished by her two daughters, Elizabeth (David) Rose and Catherine (Brent) Kerslake; Grandchildren Danica Rose (Josh), Sheena Rogers, Christina Rose (Oeloff), Lesley How (Dustin) and Tyler Kerslake (Ashlyn); Great Grandchildren Marlow, Maude, Gavin, Scarlett, Oelina, Christoff, Tulip, Moene, Jackson, Ryan and Henley. Sister Hazel Jaqueline Rohan (Lye) and Brother Ronald William Lye. Phyllis was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years Harvey McIntosh, her parents Henry and Hazel Lye, Sister Diana Taylor and her favourite Aunt Gladys Thompson.
Phyllis attended school in Macgregor from Grades 1 - 12 and after her high school graduation, she attended St. John’s College for one year on the University of Manitoba campus. Phyllis then enrolled in the three-year Nursing program at Winnipeg General Hospital. Public Health Nursing became Phyllis’s next passion so she enrolled in the Public Health university program allowing her to be home more with her daughters.
Phyllis spent her childhood in Macgregor which involved going to the church, singing in the choir, skating at the local rink and attending Girl Guides. Phyllis obtained her grade 10 royal conservatory in piano, which she says “gave me an extra school credit”. The family dog Bowser was a favourite of hers and would meet both Phyllis and Ronald everyday after school to walk them home. She spent her summers at Clear Lake with her family. Played tennis with her Mom, Dad and siblings. Attended the local dances both at Macgregor and Clear Lake.
Phyllis married her high school sweetheart Harvey McIntosh in 1947 after he returned from the war. They moved to Winnipeg where Phyllis began her nursing career at Winnipeg General. She absolutely loved her career and was Head Nurse on many wards in addition to the Night Supervisor at Winnipeg General. In 1967 Harvey and Phyllis moved to Souris, Manitoba. Harvey purchased the Modern IGA grocery store. Phyllis was the local Public Heath Nurse and was very well respected in the community. Friends and family would come and spend summers visiting and enjoying water sports on the river behind their home, and golfing. Harvey and Phyllis spent 35 years in Souris where they enjoyed an incredible group of friends and had an active social life.
All her life Phyllis loved dancing, music and entertaining, bridge and reading. When she moved from Souris to Winnipeg in 2002 to an assisted living facility, she thoroughly enjoyed the coffee parties, playing cards, her daily crosswords and all the other activities with new friends. Keeping up with current affairs and politics was a must for Phyllis. She faithfully read the Winnipeg Free Press and The Globe and Mail daily. Her appreciation for the British Monarchy was also very evident around her home. Phyllis was a member of a sorority group in both Souris and Winnipeg, enjoying their programs and activities.
Phyllis’s favourite thing to do was shopping, which began when she was very young travelling back and forth to Winnipeg from Macgregor with her mom. This passion has since been passed down too many of her family members.
Harvey & Phyllis began to go to Palm Springs beginning in the late 70’s. Harvey played golf, while Phyllis would spend hours shopping on El Paseo Drive. They enjoyed international travel to Europe and the Caribbean.
Phyllis’s presence at all family gatherings and in our lives will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Arthritic Society of Canada
