Rosalie, Richard and David, our sincere condolences and deep sympathy to you on the loss of Hans, your loving husband, father and grandfather.
I first got to know Hans in 1985 when working in AECL Pinawa, and I quickly discovered what a great sense of fun & wit he was blessed with. This kicked off a life-long friendship, and we stayed in touch long after I left Canada. When back in Ireland, Hans persuaded me to join him on a cycling trip along the Mosel, Main and Rhine rivers in Germany and Austria. I needed little encouragement, and I have superb memories of the time we had on that and subsequent cycling trips. Hans had the happy knack of befriending every stranger we met en route and he charmed many a hotel-owner, barman and waitress along the way.
Hans was always easy company. He had great wisdom and a healthy disrespect for authority and pomposity. He was always a breath of fresh air.
Hans stood out from the crowd. He was a firm believer in his own opinions, although wise enough not to share them too widely! But he knew himself well, far better than most, and never uttered an insincere word. He kept his counsel well, and when he did speak his views it was always gold.
We will miss Hans, but more than most, we will treasure him and his memories. He bought much to my life that I am so grateful for, and we are all the better for the time we spent with him.

Hans will always be with us whether we are going on foot or cycling through a road or forest. He will be with us as we read a book or enjoying a simple meal with friends. And he will be there every time I taste a new beverage of choice. Cheers, my friend, my uncle my mentor. You will be missed but never forgotten ❤️
