GARY KENNETH PETERS

April 1, 1944 – February 15, 2025

Sadly, on February 15, 2025, our family lost a father, brother, beloved uncle, and friend. After a short stay at St. Boniface Hospital, Gary Kenneth Peters passed silently while at rest with his family by his side.

He is survived by his two sons Ken and Todd, his brother Richard (Sandy), his sister Deborah(Johnny), nieces, nephews, cousins in England and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents Betty and Ken Peters, his brother Robert, his sister Susan, his newphew Michael and his beloved grandson Kevin.

Gary was born in Ripe Crossing, England, amidst WWII, and came to Canada on the Queen Mary with his Mother (English Warbride) in 1946, something he repeatedly reminisced about and was proud of. Gary grew up in East Elmwood and graduated from Tec Voc High School prior to a 3-year tour as a Royal Canadian Navy cook.

Gary met the love of his Life Sue West, when he was manager at the A&W on Regent and Sue was a car hop. They soon married and had two boys Kenny and Todd and lived on Martin Ave and then St Vital on Dells Crescent. They spend many a weekend in Woodridge with Amma and Cam at the cabin. Gary was employed by Canada Post and worked his way up into a Management position. When Garys marriage ended he moved to Ottawa for a few years until he took an early retirement and came back to Winnipeg. In retirement he travelled south for many winters to either Texas or Florida with friends. He was involved with the Adventurers Club for Singles for many years and loved to dance and socialize and made many friends there.

He loved to golf and was a regular at Oakwood Golf course and Canoe Club. He also loved to be at the lakes of Manitoba in the summer and would rent a cabin every summer in the Whiteshell and the last few years Falcon Lake and spend time with his sister Deb at Toniata beach. He also loved to play Bridge and was a regular at Bronx Community Club and friends houses for an afternoon of cards.

Garys passion for model Railroads was second to none and built a whole system of trains and towns in half of his basement where he spent many hours putting together his tracks and Soo Line trains. He would travel to Railroad conventions throughout the United States.

In the last couple of years Gary needed much help and his son Todd would be by on a regular basis to take him to his appointments, set him up with Homecare and drive into town even if he needed milk for his tea.

Gary was a polite and considerate person with a good heart. He had his own brand of humor which would leave you scratching your head in wonder! He always had the same answers when you asked him "what are you up to?" he'd say 6'2" or if you asked him how he was doing? it was always "still above the green" or how's your day? it would be "same old rat race!" He definitely was one of a kind and we will miss him dearly.

We would like to thank the staff at the St Boniface Hospital for their kindness and comfort to Gary in his last few days.

Gary's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Because I believe the spirit lives on and on, I refer to my dear friend Gary in the present...he is one of the kindest persons I know, also on the go, in many realms, involved with community and a wide circle of friends, particularly in the kitchen and his wide use of Peter's spice, we shared many a mean, however, his deep love for his family always evident. You will be dearly missed and remember as a gentle giant, light on your feet on the dance floor. I can now see you dancing with your ancestors who are in the spirit world.

Gary was a part of my mom and dad's wedding party and good friends with him. When I was growing up I got to go visit him sometimes and have great memories of hanging out with him. Hugs go to the family. 🙏😥❤️

Gary started at the Post Office the same day I did, July 4, 1967, and our friendship continued through our time there. As well, we curled at Shilo a few years and golfed at Canada Post tournaments. A wonderful man he will be missed.

I met Him through Don and loved catching up with him at Heritage Club golf games. He gave the best hugs and had such a memorable laugh. Our condolences to you all.

It is so difficult to lose a parent ......

May your Dad's passing bring a sense of peace and blessing to you and find comfort in the knowledge that they are free of pain and no longer suffering.

Sending love and hugs to all the family ...
