STEVEN PIND

March 22, 1960 – November 4, 2023

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Steve Pind on November 4, 2023 at the age of 63.

Steve will be deeply missed by his wife Mariko, his children Meredith, Adrienne (Jeff), and Nolan, former wife and friend Molly, siblings David (Angela), Kevin (Sharon), Maureen (Bill), Scott (Shaylene), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Pamela, and Niels.

Steve was born in Toronto, ON on March 22, 1960. He lived outside of Lakefield, ON for much of his childhood farming corn and raising and showing cattle. He attended university at Brock, Queen’s, and University of Toronto, where he met and married Molly.  Soon after, Meredith was born. The family moved to San Diego, CA when Steve started working at Scripps Research Institute.  There they welcomed Adrienne. In 1996 he began working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the University of Manitoba. Steve and Mariko met, and then were married in 2007. Together, they welcomed Nolan into their life, and the family was complete.

Upon his retirement in 2013, Steve dedicated much of his time to looking after Nolan.  His children were the centre of his universe.  He was immensely proud of each of them, and enjoyed spending time with them. In recent years he enjoyed sharing his love of hockey and what he learned as a goalie with Nolan. He loved to go camping, travelling, bicycling, and listening to music, particularly Neil Young.  He had many hobbies including repairing stereos, woodworking, and building bikes. Steve will be remembered for his honesty, his sense of humour, and his unconditional love for his family. Though he wouldn’t admit it, he also had a soft spot for his dogs and cats.

Cremation has already taken place. Per his wishes, a private celebration of life will be held for close family members.

Steve was truly generous and compassionate, and helped anyone in need. He would have loved nothing more than for others to give back to the community in the same spirit. If desired, donations in memory of Steve can be made to the Toba Centre for Children and Youth, the Main Street Project, or any charity of your choice.

Steve's family kindly requests that all of his friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour his memory by watching the photo-biography above. Please, also consider sharing your own photos, memories, and stories by making use of the comment section on this page.

Our deepest condolences to Steve's family and friends for your sad loss. My Mom, Véronique Mitchell, was especially saddened to hear of Steve's passing. She said after reading the details of Steve's obituary, that Steve had clearly lived up to the example of kindness that ran in the Pind family. Steve was the first child my Mom met in Lakefield when she arrived in '65 and was living on the ninth line.  The Pind family was very kind and welcoming to her.  She could see the kindness and gentleness of his parents and grandparents in him when she knew him. Sandra Mitchell, on behalf of my mother, Véronique Mitchell and family

So sorry Mariko for your loss. Extending my heartfelt sympathy to you, Meredith, Adrienne, and Nolan, and your families. Steve was a remarkably gentle and kind soul. Always smiling around the halls of the Biochemistry & Medical Genetics department at the UofM -- were I was a grad student from 1999 to 2000, which coincided with the release of Neil Young's album Silver & Gold. Since then, when I think of Neil Young, I also think of Steve... and always will.

It is quite the shock to hear about Steven. He was a good, gentle, kind person and I remember him fondly especially from the days at the Best Institure at University of Toronto. My condolences. Vince

Our hearts were filled with such sadness when we found out about Steve’s passing. He was an immensely kind man, with such a good soul. I will miss our runs ins, his humour and fatherly wisdom, that I truly sought and appreciated whenever we saw each other. Gone far too soon, but never forgotten. We send lots of love to his family during this extremely difficult time.  -The happier you fly, the sadder you fall…                          Neil Young  Love Aaron, Kirsten, Asher and Olivia

Rest in eternal peace, Steven. I will not forget your gentleness, passion for teaching, and contributions you made to medical education, on behalf of our department (BMG).  I continue to teach your tutorial: Protein Modification and Glycoproteins: The Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Regulator. This tutorial is now a classic for me and everyone teaching future physicians.

Steve was a wonderful person with a warm, welcoming personality.   He was one of the first to welcome me to the  University of Manitoba and was a source of great support when I had challenges as a new professor.   His attention to detail and compassion for students was remarkable and something that I have strived to emulate.   We have wonderful memories of curling with Steve and Mariko.    Our thoughts are with his family and please reach out if you need anything.  Jeff and Nic

Thank you for the powerful and touching tribute to Steven, the photo-biography and Neil Young piece where "...the women were all beautiful. The men stood straight and tall".  In the photos I had noticed how fully human Steve  was, how "straight and tall" he stood. The eldest of siblings who all stand straight and tall. Deepest sympathy to his loved ones.

As Steven’s girls were in elementary and high school with my Jenny, I often would be dropping by to the Elm Street house to pick up Meredith or drop Jenny off for play-dates! A gentle, kind soul who loved his family - that is how I will remember him. Taken too soon. Hugs to all at this time and he’ll be looking down with love always.

Of course we don’t know Steven but met his daughter Meredith this past summer when her friend Jenny married our son Brent.  A beautiful girl who will miss her dad dearly. Sympathies to the whole family.

I cried when he went to University; but pretended it was because I lost my favourite ball. He gave me the love of music at 9 years old. He gave me The Beatles White Album because he didn’t care for it!?  We shared the love for music, heart surgery and our kids and we were always the other “SP”. So sad. “Old man take a look at my life I’m a lot like you…..”
