DOROTHY RATZLAFF

(née KLASSEN)

May 6, 1931 - January 9, 2024

On January 9, 2024, Dorothy died at her home at Shaftesbury Residences in Winnipeg, where she had moved in 2021 to be near her son Steve and his family. Dorothy was born at Hanna, Alberta, on May 6, 1931, seven years after her parents Maria (Peters) and David Klassen had arrived in Canada, fleeing the chaos that was engulfing Russia at that time. She grew up on a small farm near Linden, Alberta, in a lively household of eleven children.

In 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, Ray Ratzlaff. From 1951-55, Dorothy taught in small rural schools: Gumbo, Antler and Linden Rural. She enjoyed teaching and returned to it periodically, but most of these early years were devoted to raising a family of three children: Jennifer, born in 1954, Steven in 1956, and Brad in 1959. Dorothy had a deep love of music, something she passed on to her children.

Wherever she went, Dorothy created a gracious, welcoming home. From 1969 to 1972, the family lived in Edmonton, a move prompted by Ray’s political career. In 1974, along with Brad, Dorothy and Ray moved to Kandern, Germany where they both taught at Black Forest Academy.  Ray and Dorothy spent the years 1978 to 1986, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Ray was principal of Eden Christian College and Dorothy made it a practice to invite graduating students to lunch, 400 of them over the years.

After eight years spent in this idyllic setting, Ray took early retirement. He and Dorothy wanted to be close to ailing parents, so they moved back to their beloved acreage near Linden. Dorothy enjoyed gardening and started to develop an interest in landscape painting.

In 2000, Ray and Dorothy bought a home in Three Hills - large enough to continue to host family and friends, and for Dorothy to have a studio where she continued to work at her painting. She was part of a group of artists who worked together to develop their skills. Dorothy and Ray enjoyed the congregational life of St. Barnabas Anglican Church.

Most of Dorothy’s final years were spent in their beloved condo at Linden Lodge. There, Dorothy and Ray enjoyed the company of old and new friends and continued to love each other till Ray died in 2019.

Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was a good friend to many.  She lived her life with the assurance that she was a child of God. She will be missed.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Ray; siblings Margaret, David, Helen, Rudy, Ed, Bernie, Eric; and her infant son Michael. She is survived by her children, Jennifer, Steve (Catheryn), and Brad (Carol); grandchildren, Maxime, Dorian, Ben (Rachelle), Sarah (Arshile), Sam, John (Allison), Greg (Joy), and Derrick; greatgrandchildren, Rielle, Renée, Owen, and Liam; siblings, Erwin (Elvira), Rae Rempel, and Trudi Neufeld; as well as many treasured nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Linden Mennonite Brethren Church on February 3rd at 2pm.

Dorothy's family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.

Dear Jennifer, Steven, and and Brad, Our hearts go out to you at this time as you mourn the loss of your precious mother.  We wish so much we could be with you in person. Your parents were a remarkable couple with their wit, sense of humour, and their enthusiastic commitment to love and serve God with their music, hospitality, friendship and love. We have wonderful memories of our times together in Edmonton, Calgary, and Linden, including giving you some piano lessons. They were so thankful and proud of you and enjoyed their trips to Winnipeg to attend your dramas, Steven, and attend your concerts, Brad.  May God bless you and fill you with all joy and peace.

Dear Brad, family and friends - thank you for sharing such a beautiful tribute to your mother. It is clear how dedicated Dorothy was to her family, friends and to her faith. She and Ray passed on their love of music to their children, and we feel so fortunate for that, as we have worked with Brad for decades as friends and colleagues, and we are so grateful for the gift of Ray and Dorothy to him which he, in turn, passed on to so many in his Toronto music communities. We are deeply sorry for your most profound loss, but we know that both Dorothy and Ray will be forever in your hearts. Jessie Iseler and the Elmer Iseler Singers organization join me in sending our deepest condolences to you all. Lydia Adams, Artistic Director, Elmer Iseler Singers, Toronto

It was a real pleasure to know Ray and Dorothy.  We had marvellous visits over coffee and dinner times.  Dorothy really listened when you spoke with her.  It made the moment special.   We shall miss her.

Ray and I first met your parents in 1969 when we lived in Edmonton and the  two Rays were Cabinet colleagues. Dorothy and I immediately became friends, attending Christian Womens Club, hosting receptions for Premier and Mrs. Strom and being in Mrs. Mannings receiving line at the Legislatures Opening reception all while enjoying raising our young families.  Later we visited your family often in Linden at their beautiful acreage which was always beautifully kept. They also came to visit us at our farm in Enchant and even attended Moms funeral in at the Vauxhall Mennonite church. I remember well one of last visits to Rosebud and the proud parents sharing  their childrens  professional success as playwriters, actors,  musicans and academics. How lucky you ;Jennifer, Steven and Brad were to have had such gifted parents who were always an example of strong faith, complemented by trust, respect and integrity in public and private life. Aunt Dorothy was such a kind, loving Aunt, who cared deeply for others. I was often touched by her phone calls inquiring after my children, and her ability to rally support during challenging times. We loved sharing our Christmas celebrations at the Linden Lodge with both Uncle Ray and Aunt Dorothy. Their shared gift and love of music was such a treasure for my children to witness, and participate in. She will be dearly missed.  - Marie Gaschnitz (Klassen)

Our sincerest condolences to the Ratzlaff and Klassen families. On Saturday, I asked our school reverend if we could sing one of aunt Dorothy’s favorite hymns - How Great Thou Art, in her honour. She once told me that this was the unofficial Klassen family hymn. You can listen to it at 42:45 in the video https://www.youtube.com/live/7oHTIfMZuS8?feature=shared

I was very very fond of Dorothy, and Ray! They were both relevant, relational, thoughtful, artistic, intentional, devoted to God, so lovely and worthy of emulation.  Steve and our kids enjoyed their company too and we are just so grateful for the times we had with them. This photo is from their 2015 vacations to Sidney, BC - where they would say, "we don't need to go to Mexico. BC flowers and the ocean are enough". Hmmm, okay. Lol.  Dorothy was such a gem! I am comforted by our recent visit to Winnipeg to see her and knowing that someday we will spend time together again in God's continuing kingdom. Her advice and love are with me in the meantime and I am richer, ever so much richer for that!  With love,  Beth Hankinson (nee Freeman - Dorothy's 2nd cousin)
