HEDWIG SCHAM

May 31, 1926 – June 29, 2024

Hedwig was born in Ignacow, Poland on May 31, 1926. She is predeceased by her late husband of 43 years, Oskar Scham; her father Johann and mother Elsa Gitzel; brother Artur Gitzel; and sisters, Selma Pletz and Lucy Plonke. Hedwig will be sadly missed by her daughter Waltraud Fenekoldt; son George Scham; daughter in law Robin; grandchildren, Karsten  Fenekoldt, James  Fenekoldt,  Andrea Scham (Fred), and Karina Scham (Kelly). She was also blessed with four great grandchildren, Kyle  Fenekoldt,   Kaiden  Fenekoldt,  Emelie Tollenaere, and Anders Van Caeyzeele.

Hedwig grew up on the family farm in Poland. They worked very hard there and were able to adequately provide for all the needs of their family. This all abruptly changed with the onset of the war. Hedwig and her younger sister, Selma, suffered several years of hardship before being reunited with her family. Shortly after they moved to Germany and spent many years there before immigrating to Canada in 1953 with their then 18-month-old daughter, Waltraud. Their new journey began staying with family on a farm in Carmen, Manitoba. Having to find meaningful employment, they ended up settling down in Winnipeg.

Hedwig spent 25 years of her working career at the Misericordia Hospital, working as a baker’s assistant in the bake shop. Her love of baking and cooking were a delightful blessing to us all.

Hedwig became a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church shortly after her arrival to Winnipeg, and remained a member until her passing.

Hedwig’s true love of life was her family. She was always there to help us in our times of need. She enjoyed nothing more than to sit down around her table with her family to enjoy a wonderfully delicious home cooked meal.

Hedwig spent her free time at Red Rock Lake. There you could embrace the aroma of her fine cooking far down Shangri-la Rd. She also had a passion for gardening. Her property at Red Rock Lake   always looked like a park with all of its rock gardens.

Omi will be sadly missed. Her Celebration of Life will take place at 11:00am on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church (65 Walnut St.) with interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend sincerest thanks to the staff at West Park Manor for the loving, compassionate care.

Hedwig’s family kindly requests that all of her friends and relatives take a few minutes to honour her memory by sharing photos, memories, and stories, using the comment section on this page.
