JAMES ALEXANDER SHEARER

January 22, 1955 - February 12, 2023

It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of James (Jim) Alexander Shearer on Sunday February 12, 2023 in Sooke, BC at the age of 68.

Jim was determined to live life to the fullest and continued to do so as he took on his battle with cancer. In the last two months alone, he attended and participated in his son William’s wedding to his wife Melissa, traveled to Winnipeg, gathered with friends and family for his 68th birthday and spent precious weeks with his children and first grandchild, Hazel.

Jim’s career included working for the MB provincial government EIA programs, John Howard Society (Restorative Resolutions) and various city of Winnipeg programs.  He lived out his values in the work he did while helping others and was passionate about politics, social justice and education.  Jim went back to university after his son William was born, but always claimed that his first degree was in “CBCology”; he loved to learn and share what he knew with others.

Jim retired early and enjoyed his “longest coffee break” in so many ways. He worked on many building projects at the cottages he built on Lake Winnipeg, traveled, golfed, and bought his dream retirement home with his wife Marlene in Sooke, BC.

He was a lifelong curler and as a young man was very involved in the water skiing and boating community at White Lake. He had a knack for making friends wherever he went, from his sports teams, work colleagues and all of the friends he made in his most recent community in Sooke, BC.

Jim’s love for his wife and children was incredibly deep. He knew love was never wasted and he doled it out in waves. The love he had for his wife Marlene was especially profound; a partnership and love for the ages.

He leaves behind his wife Marlene, his children William (Melissa), Elizabeth (Cole) and little Hazel, his first grandchild.

Jim also leaves his mother Reta, siblings Don (Corie) and Barb, Nephew Brendan (Nicole) and Nieces Caelyn and Emma (Mariana). Jim is predeceased by his father-in-law Frank Richert (1993), father Edward Shearer (2020), mother-in-law Lydia Richert (2021) brothers-in-law Bernie Narvey (2021) and Harold Richert (2022).

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to your local food bank to support those in need.

A celebration of life will be held in Winnipeg on Saturday March 11, at the Universalist Unitarian Church at 1pm (603 Wellington Crescent)
