KENNETH ALBERT SMYLIE

May 2, 1955 – November 27, 2016

Ken Smylie, the beloved husband of Carole, passed away suddenly at his Winnipeg residence on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the age of 61 years.

 

Born in Fort William, Ontario to Audrey (Etienne) and Gordon Smylie as the fifth child of eight. He moved to Calgary in 1978 where he began his carpentry apprenticeship with Poole Construction. Ken loved his trade and first became a superintendent at PCL Winnipeg district in 1989. Ken was a dedicated and loyal employee of PCL and also with Centron. He was very committed to completing his projects. He traveled extensively and was always willing to be where he was needed. His passion for his trade and love for construction inspired those around him.

 

Ken met Carole and daughter Charlene in 1979 and grew as a family as Ken shared his love of the outdoors and his kind and loving nature. Ken was a humble, gentle man who loved fishing, golfing and spending time with his grandsons and all children in his life. All children loved spending time with him.

 

Ken is survived by wife and best friend Carole; Daughter Charlene (Terrence); grandsons Dexter & Huxley; sisters Madeline (Bruce), Dolly (Ron), Mary (Tony); brother Tom (Connie); sister-in-law Linda; brother-in-law Dan; 7 nieces, 6 nephews, 4 grandnieces, 9 grandnephews. He was predeceased by parents Gordon and Audrey; siblings Wilfred, Cork & Edna; nephew Steven; sister-in-law Thelma; favorite Aunt Marie; dearest friends Gunther, Zennith and Keith as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

 

The family wishes to thank Ken's PCL friends and colleagues, the exceptional Winnipeg First Responders, City Police and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Ken was an outstanding man who lived life on his own terms.

 

A service will take place on December 17, 2016 at 2:00 pm at St Bernadette’s Catholic Church, 7103 20A St SE, Calgary, AB and officiated by Father Wayne Poile assisted by Deacon Michael Soentgerath. Light lunch to follow. Private interment at a later date.
