GILBERT VERMETTE

September 24, 1953 - May 8, 2022

It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, Dad, grandpa, brother, brother-in-law, son, uncle, cousin, friend, Mr. Hockey and the Bruins biggest fan.

Gil is lovingly remembered by his wife of 44 years, Sandy; daughters Niki (Adam) and Amy (Brett); son Ryan (Rae); adoring grandchildren; brother Bob (Sue); sister Monique (Rob); along with his many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and teammates.

Gil was born in Winnipeg on September 24, 1953 and spent his younger years in Winnipeg, before moving to Brandon as a teen. In 1974, he met the great love of his life, Sandy. They married in 1977 and had three children who he was unendingly proud of. Known to everyone who was privileged enough to meet him as a proud, yet humble man with a kind soul and a fantastic sense of humor, Gil worked hard, so he could also play hard. His career in the retail industry was an opportunity to work with people, which he loved to do, and it was this very work which also enabled him to travel North America and Europe with his family. He retired in 2017 and settled into a life where he was able to enjoy his passions, sleeping in and creating many more memories with his wife, his kids and his grandkids. Gil loved his family more than anything in this world, they were his pride and joy.

Gil lived a life filled with laughter and love and his smile and smirk lit up any room that was fortunate enough to have him in it. Gil loved to travel, engage in anything and everything hockey related, golf, spend time at the cottage in Clear Lake, the endless family events and dinners, music, storytelling, and he loved to attend his kids and grandkids events and activities. His love and unending devotion to his family will be missed and we will be left to cherish the many memories, the laughter, the love and the joy he brought to all our lives.

Gil’s family kindly requests that you take a few minutes to honour his memory by visiting his tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. Memories and stories published by those who knew him are available there.

Sandy…. Brian and I are so saddened to hear this news today of Gil’s passing. Although we didn’t know him well, he was so much fun to be around at our nursing reunions.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

My heart broke a little when I heard of Gil’s passing. We went to high school together in Brandon, after he realized BCI wasn’t as cool, he came over to Vincent Massey, and he fit right in with our group. Reading through our yearbook brought back so many faces, and friends that were our world. Gil, myself, my sister, Carol, Glenda, the Ryan twins, Ken, Blaine, Art, Wes. What a motley crew we were but we did it together. We were always “teachers pets”, well to some, and yes we all passed.  Anyone that met Gil, was greeted with a smile, a soft spoken voice, was treated with respect, and that’s all it took. He was “that guy”, that got along with everyone. Gil loved hockey, it was his passion. And he was pretty darn good too. We kept in contact a few years after school, but then as often does, life gets in the way and we move on. My husband had a chance “retired guy’s”lunch meeting with Gil about two months ago, and when he told me, I just beamed, asked how he was, then gave him heck for not calling me. I would have been there in a flash to come see him. I have thought of him since, and hoped we might have another opportunity to see him. The world lost one of the good guys, a true gentleman for sure. RIP my dear friend

Dear Sandy and family: It is with great sadness that we hear of Gil’s passing. Our time together goes back to when his parents and my parents lived across the street from each other on Delta Bay in Brandon’s east end. Many an hour was spent playing street hockey and him trying to teach me, a non-hockey player the finer points of the game. Imagine the surprise when he turned up many years later at BMHC’s school of nursing! It was always a pleasure getting together for visits and reminiscing with you and Gil at our nursing reunions. Our thought and prayers are with you and your family. May God bless and comfort you in this difficult time. Andre and Gloria Remillard

Please allow me to extend my deepest condolences to Sandy and family. Gil was one of my most favourite managers I have had the honour to work for at Walmart. He taught me many valuable lessons that I still use in my work day today. He always rewarded hard work with fun and humour. I will never be able to forget Gil dressed as Robin Hood for our profit sharing presentation day! The world has lost a great man.
